だいよんか ー ぶんぽう うんてん

Verb ない formplain, negative form -We already learned dictionary form, which is the plain, positive form of verbs. How do we make them negative? First we need to consider the mysterious case of vowel verbs (group one verbs)…

Did you know that group 1 verbs use all of the Japanese vowels? あ – ない form よまない い - ます form よみます う - dictionary form よむ え - potential form よめる お - plain suggestion form (we’ll see it in J3)

Verb ない formplain, negative form So let’s see how this goes: Group 1 verbs Drop ます, change い sound to corresponding あ sound then add ない. かきます → かかない はなします → はなさ ない しにます → しなないしります → しら ない かちます → かたないあいます → あわない

Verb ない formplain, negative form However, there is something very important you must know. あります does not become あらない あります in the ない form is simply ない If you choose to use あらない, you may just cease to exist.

Verb ない formplain, negative form Group 2 verbs: Drop ます, and add ない. (Our friends!) たべます → たべないねます → ねない みます → みないおきます → おき ない かります → かりないきこえます → きこえな い

Verb ない formplain, negative form Group 3 verbs: You just have to memorize these friends. 来ます → 来ないします → しない きます → こない Now go be negative as plainly as possible!

V ないで ⁺ 下さい The V ないで + ください form is the negative request form. We learned that the てください form is the polite request form, so now we need to be able to ask people not to do things. It’s construction is quite easy. Just a で + ください to a verb’s proper ない form and you are all set.

V ないで ⁺ 下さい れい: 私をみないでください。 Don’t look at me. こくばんでかかないでください。 Don’t write on the board. きゅうにとまらないで下さい。 Don’t stop suddenly. ここでたばこをすわないで下さい。 Don’t smoke cigarettes here.

V ないで ⁺ 下さい Your turn: Please don’t speed. スピードをださないで下さい。 Please don’t drink in class. クラスでのまないで下さい。 Please don’t talk in a loud voice. 大きいこえではなさないで下さい。

Using plain forms Now that we have learned two plain forms we can start using speaking and writing more casually. But plain form is also used for many grammatical functions as well. Thus it is important that we learn how to use plain forms correctly in the beginning. So what have we learnt so far?

Plain form of verbs positive, present, plain dictionary form Ex: よむ、かく、みる、する positive, past, plain た form (we’ll see this in Ch.7) Ex: よんだ、かいた、みた、し た negative, present, plain ない form Ex: よまない、かかない、 みない、しない negative, past, plain なかった form Ex: よまなかった、かかなかっ た みなかった、しなかった

Plain form of い adjectives positive, present, plain drop the です Ex: やすい、こわい positive, past, plain drop the です Ex: やすかった、こわかった negative, present, plain drop the です Ex: やすくない、こわくない negative, past, plain drop the です Ex: やすくなかった、 こわくなかった

Plain form for copula です (nouns & な adjectives) positive, present, plain です → だ Ex: いぬだ。 It is a dog. positive, past, plain でした → だった Ex: いぬだった。 It was a dog. negative, present, plain でわありません → じゃない Ex: いぬじゃない。 It isn’t a dog. negative, past, plain でわありませんでした → じゃなかった Ex: いぬじゃなかった。 It wasn’t a dog.

Using plain forms Knowing proper endings for plain sentences is the foundation for Japanese grammar. Can you do it? Change this sentence to the plain form. せんせいが大すきですから、お金をあげます。 せんせいは大すきだから、お金をあげる。 I love sensei, so I give her money.

ぶんぽう – Adverbs Some adverbs are made from い and な adjectives. The are formed in different ways. *REMEMBER! Adverbs describe verbs, while adjectives describe nouns! The adverbs are placed in the sentence somewhere after the subject and before the verb.

ぶんぽう – Adverbs Changing い adjectives into adverbs. In order to make an い adjective into an adverb, the final い is dropped and replaced by く. い adjective → い adjective + く はやい → はやく quickly, early おそい → おそく slowly, late いい → よく well うるさい → うるさく noisily

ぶんぽう – Adverbs はやくうんてんしないで下さい。 Please do not drive fast. よくできました。 You did well.

ぶんぽう – Adverbs Changing な adjectives into adverbs. In order to make an な adjective into an adverb, に is added to the adjective. な adjective → な adjective + に しずか → しずかに quietly じゆう → じゆうに freely きれい → きれいに neatly きゅう → きゅうに suddenly

ぶんぽう – Adverbs つくえの上にきれいにして下さい。 Please clean off the top of your desk. (make it clean) ここではじゆうにはなしてもいい です。 You may talk freely here.

ぶんぽう – Adverbs かいてみて: I got up late today. 今日おそくおきました。 Please study quietly in the library. としょうかんでしずかにべんきょ うして下さい。
