10 What does it mean? ふとっています。 Or やせていません。 マライアはうたっています。 かえっています。 バスケットボールをしています。 シャツをきています。

11 （〜て）います 1. Describes an action in progress (-ing) テニスをしています (I am playing tennis) 2. A past event connected to the future (a state) けっこんしています。 (I am married)

12 〜ています こうこうの時はめがねをかけていました。 アメリカのかいしゃにつとめています。 あねはけっこんしています。 いまソウルにすんでいます。 こどもがひとりいます。 ちょっとふとっています。 日本語をべんきょうしています。

13 Group 1: Verbs that describe a continuous state いますあります These two forms will never take a 〜ています ending. You can never have いている or あっている (if you do see this, it is not one of these verbs) こどもがひとりいます。 → a state: She has a child.

15 Group 2: activities that last for a while マライアはうたっています。 Mariah is singing. (she is in the process of doing it now) 私は日本語をべんきょうしています。 (I am learning Japanese (right now).) (I am doing that now) OR, another meaning (I learn Japanese) OR! 私は毎日日本語をべんきょうしています。 (  A habitual action of studying Japanese, not 24/7)

17 Group 3: change of state ふとっています。 (is overweight) (you weren’t at one time, but now you are in the state of it) シャツをきています。 (I have a shirt on.) (at one time I didn’t, now I am in the state) おきています。 (I am awake!) (In the state) **Important! 行く、くる、かえる； travel verbs are in group 3. Think of them as in transition.

18 So… What is the difference here? けっこんします vs けっこんしています たべます vs たべています かえります vs かえっています。 1.I will get married. (intention) vs I am married. (state) 2.I will eat it. (intention, action) vs. I am eating it (right now). (action in progress) 3. I will go home. (something that will happen) vs. I am on my way home. (changing state)

19 Grammatically? Do your てー Form thing… Is it う、る、 irregular verb? Conjugate and attach! For う verbs, don’t forget to call for Santa! ( うつる … って むぶぬ … んで く … いて ぐ … いで す … して くる、きて する、して いく、いって！

20 Add the end: てー form + います Affirmativenegative present うたっています He is singing. うたっていません He isn’t singing. past うたっていました He was singing. うたっていませんでした He was not singing.
