Integrated search Search portal integrating different services Gives users appropriate navigational guidance to find the required information without needing to think about which service holds it. Results categorized by type of content Access the required content GeNii is a broad-reaching search service for Japan's academic information. It currently incorporates four different services, plus integrated search of all four. The academic information that can be searched for using GeNii includes many different types of information, such as information about academic papers, or information about books. The four separate services are provided to enable information to be searched for and displayed in a way that is appropriate for the characteristics of a particular type of information. However, researchers also want to be able to do comprehensive searches on a particular theme irrespective of the type of information. GeNii's integrated search is designed to enable that sort of search. - It acts as a portal that integrates different search services. - It aims to provide researchers with a picture of what sort of data is available, which service it is available from, and how much data is available. GeNii's role, therefore, is to provide navigational guidance to the various services. That completes the overall description of GeNii. I would now like to give you a brief outline of each of the four individual services for academic information with different characteristics. CiNii is a vast bibliographic database for academic papers published in Japan, including data on journals of Japanese academic societies, research bulletins, and the Japanese Periodicals Index from the National Diet Library. Instead of focusing on a particular field or fields, it provides broad coverage of academic research in general. The second of GeNii's individual services is Webcat Plus, a service that brings together information on books and journals. - One of the 'pluses' in Webcat Plus is that it has an extra type of searching. In addition to ordinary keyword searching that works by matching a publication's title, author, ISBN or similar information, Webcat Plus also provides 'associative search,' which enables you to search using keywords or pieces of text to find publications that are closely related to the topic you are interested in. After the first search you can search again, either using keywords suggested by the associative search engine or by indicating which of the publications found by the first search interests you most. Webcat Plus uses this process to find the sort of publications that you are looking for. - Another 'plus' is the extra content covered. In addition to its comprehensive bibliographical catalog of holdings of books and journals in university and similar libraries throughout Japan, Webcat Plus also includes bibliographical information about commercially published books. That enables it to cover the whole range of publications from newly published books to old books that are only available in libraries. - A third 'plus' is the extra information available about books and journals. The basis of Webcat Plus is the union catalog database that is being constructed in a collaborative effort by university libraries nationwide through the Internet using NII's NACSIS-CAT service. In addition to the union catalog database, Webcat Plus also features a database of commercially published Japanese and English books that includes descriptions and tables of contents. KAKEN covers researches conducted under the Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research provided by MEXT -- that's the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology -- and by JSPS, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. It contains details of research proposals that were adopted, together with reports on the progress of the research and outlines of deliverables resulting from the research. For each research topic, you can view the proposal that was adopted, progress reports and outlines of deliverables. For research projects that continue for a number of years, the progress of the project can be followed from year to year.

However, because there has not been an efficient means of making them generally available, they have tended to remain unknown and it has often been difficult for the creators to maintain them for long periods. These factors have often made it difficult for such databases to be available to the public.

One of CiNii's features is that it covers a particularly wide range of information on academic papers because it collects information from a number of different Japanese databases. To put that another way, it provides a way to do one-stop searching for Japanese academic papers. The original databases that provide the information used by CiNii are very diverse, including - databases that provide very comprehensive information on bibliography, - databases that include citation information, and - databases that include abstracts and full texts of academic papers. CiNii has successfully incorporated all of these features, with the benefit that the unique data available in the original databases can also be accessed through CiNii. There are many cases when the same paper is included in a number of the databases, but CiNii links all the duplicate data together so that it is displayed as a single paper. What can CiNii do? Detailed information references citings This sort of citation tracking is particularly useful for: - finding researches that preceded the research in a paper, and - finding other related papers with a similar theme. It is also useful for: - recognizing the impact or influence of a paper, and - recognizing recent developments on the same theme. The number of citings -- the number of other papers that cite a particular paper -- is increasingly seen as a measure of a paper's importance and as an index to the 'performance' of the research. 25 Webcat Plus … Fun to use Associative search makes it fun to search for books. Blocks of text can be used to conduct a search. From the search result, selecting other books closest to what you were looking for and searching again is a good way of finding closely-connected documents that you were previously unaware of. Discover closely-connected keywords (associated words). Associative search is a system for searching for books on the basis of measurements of closeness of different books according to the overlapping word usage in the books. Since book A and book B contain a lot of words in common, book A and book B are considered to be strongly associated -- in other words, the system determines that the contents of each of the books are similar. (In practice, the determination is made from various different perspective, not just on the basis of number of words that overlap.) Words included in A Document A Next, I would next like to turn to Webcat Plus, which has perhaps the most unique interface of the GeNii services. Webcat Plus is a database that handles bibliographical information for books and periodicals. The most outstanding feature of Webcat Plus is its associative search function. This function automatically determines keywords from text strings, and displays information about books that appear to be related to the original text, providing the results in order so that the books that seem to have the closest association come first. Before Webcat Plus, if you wanted to find a book that gave more information about something you saw in a newspaper article, for example, you would have to guess the search keywords yourself. Even then, you would not find books that used other words with similar meanings instead of using the keywords you guessed. The Webcat Plus associative search engine was developed specifically to provide a solution to these problems. If you already know the details of a specific book that you are trying to find, you can of course still use the ordinary Webcat Plus matching search function. To show you how this works, I'd like to take you through an example using the Webcat Plus associative search function. Imagine you have found something on a website that interests you. Copy part of the document, paste it into the associative search text box and click the Search button.

Its judgment is based on the keywords included in bibliographical information for the book. The associative search can be made even more effective by repeating the search using the result of the first search that is closest to the topic that interests you. To repeat the search like this, put checks against the books that are closest to your interest, and then click the follow-up +Search button.

Associative search results and Associated words What are Associated words? 　 Words included characteristically in the book information in the search results Terms you had not noticed (synonyms, associated concepts) Unexpected discovery of associated words On the right of the window is a list of associated words -- words that are occur frequently in the search results. This can help you to find relevant keywords that you had not included in the first search. Associative search results indicate very large numbers of hits. However, what is important is not the number of hits, but the actual results near the top of the list. In other words, the most effective way of using associated search is to direct your attention towards the books that the system judged to have a close association with the search conditions. The idea behind the associative search function was to develop a fun-to-use search engine that broadens ideas, using follow-up searches to concentrate on topics that interest each particular user and suggesting related keywords. This is in direct contrast to traditional data-based searching.

You start the user registration process by signing up using a web-based online application form. Under normal circumstances, charges to institutional users are handled by payments made on the basis of invoices issued by NII. Subscriptions are in line with Japan's fiscal years, starting in April and running until the following March. Any subscriptions that start partway through the year are invoiced on a pro-rata basis for the number of remaining months. Annual subscription charges use a fixed price system, with the price depending on the number of full time teaching staff and researchers at your university or other institution. (Special conditions apply for overseas institutions, with the count only including the number of researchers conducting research relating to Japan.) The system normally verifies the identity of an institutional user by confirming that the Internet connections he or she is using is within the range of IP addresses for the registered institution. Site license individual IDs can also be issued to the institution's researchers if they need to be able to access CiNii from outside their institution's range of IP addresses, such as when they are at home or working away from the institution. To register as an individual, you can start the registration process from the CiNii website's top page. Individually registered users have the option of selecting credit card as the method of payment for user registration and access to charged content.
