There are many myths and legends about its spiritual significance and its kami. Kami are the gods of the Shinto religion, and can be elements of nature as well as ancestors. The main kami of Mt Fuji is the goddess Konohanasakuyahime, whose symbol is the cherry blossom. She is related to Amaterasu Omikami, the goddess who is said to have created the islands of Japan. Shinto shrines dot the base and slopes of the mountain, and pilgrims have been climbing Mt Fuji since ancient times. What are かみさま ? In which religion do they appear?
