19 じょうず／へた “be skilled at/be good at ~”/ “be unskilled at/be poor at ~”
X が　じょうず／へた　です A: 日本語がじょうずですね。 You: いいえ、まだまだです。 The important thing about the predicates joozu and heta is the things you are good at or poor at is marked with the particle -ga. So, for instance, if Tanaka-san is good at tennis, you would say, Tanaka-san-wa tenisu-ga joozu-desu. Please note that you would not talk about your skillfulness of certain things by using the predicate joozu. If someone complements you, for instance, by saying “Nihongo-ga joozu-desu-nee”, then, instead of saying “hai, soo desu” even if you think you are, the better response would be “iie mada mada-desu” (no, not yet), just to be humble. Don’t brag is the key in Japanese communication.
