2 What is memrise? A smartphone app for learning vocabulary (Android / iPhone / PC) Similar to Quizlet, Anki Free (paid accounts are available, not necessary) Uses interval spaced repetition (vocabulary recycling).

3 How does it work? Memrise hosts vocabulary lists that are created by users. Students create an account using an address. Logging in allows the site to track progress Students join a ‘course’ that was created on memrise.com. Vocabulary is introduced and then cycled in various tasks. 飛行機が来るのは不満 “come” + “plane”

6 Why would you use this? Deliberate vocabulary learning seems really beneficial (Nation & Newton, 2008; Thornbury, 2013) Apps are an alternative to teacher- centered vocabulary presentation. Class can be devoted to vocabulary in context and communicative use.

7 Why I like Using it. Low barrier to studying (just open the app)
Progress is recorded. Tasks are cycled automatically. If you make mistakes, terms are reviewed. Has “game-like” characteristics Students are awarded points and ranks. Students can compete with each other. Students can participate by creating mnemonics

8 Potential problems Having students find and join your course takes time. Requires a smartphone / tablet / PC iPhone and Android apps are slightly different. iPhone users can’t ‘ignore’ words. Decontextualized vocabulary study. Students should use vocabulary in class. Students may be able to do the tasks without processing

9 How I use it in my class I create a list for students
Words and phrases from the text Blocking vocabulary from reading and listening activities Test preparation (TOEIC, EIKEN, etc.) Memrise is NOT required I give vocab quizzes (日本語 English) in class. Quizzes include review vocabulary The response has been mostly positive.

10 What you need to do to get started
Create an account at memrise.com (free) Create a course Upload vocabulary Do voice recordings (optional) Have students join your course. Students create accounts Students join us course URL (QR codes work well)

4. アプリからは登録できないので、ブラウザーで登録することが必要です。QRコードリーダー、または下記のURLを使い、memriseのウェッブサイトに行ってください。 1. 英語（イギリス）が選択されていることを確認した上、「初級」をクリックする。 3. 自分のメールアドレスと新しいパスワードを入力し、「アカウント作成をクリックする。後で使うので、忘れないように注意してください。作成が終わったら、一度アプリを閉じる。 2. メールアドレスで登録をクリックする。 5. この画面が表示されたら、「Or continue to the desktop site」をクリックしてください。 7. Usernameのところを空欄にしたまま、先ほど登録したメールアドレスとパスワードを入力する。最後のチェックボックスをオンにして、「Sign up」をクリックする 8. サインインしたまま、もう一度下記のウェッブに行く。そしてもう一度、6番の緑色の「Start learning now」ボタンをクリックしたら… 10.ここの▼ボタンを押して、HUEK TOEICのコースを選択し、単語を勉強し始めてください。この画面が見られないときは「×」を押し、ホーム画面に戻る必要があります。 6.「Start learning now」の緑色のボタンをクリックしてください。 9. …この画面が見えるはずです！ここでブラウザーを閉じてアプリに戻る
