2 This year’s kanji 「災」 was chosen in this year’s kanji .
・It was announced at Kiyomizu-dera . The total number of applications amounted to 20,858 votes out of 193,214 votes. 一年の世相を表す「今年の漢字」に「災」が選ばれた。京都市東山区の清水寺で12日、日本漢字能力検定が発表した。ウェブ投票や図書館などに設置された投票箱で募集を行い、一番多かったのを発表しているそうだ。

3 Reason for being chosen
This year , a variety of disasters have occurred in various places. Such as…... ・earthquakes ・typhoons ・heavy rains ・intense heat 理由としては、北海道や大阪北部の地震、西日本豪雨や台風、記録的猛暑などが挙げられた。また、スポーツ界でのパワハラ問題、大学の不正入試問題などが発覚し、多くの人がこれらを人災や災いとして捉えたから。

4 History This year’s kanji started in 1995.
There are twenty three kanji chosen so far. The first 「震」. The second time　「災」　has been chosen for the first time since 2014. 今年の漢字は平成7年から始まっている。一回目となった「震」は阪神淡路大震災から。「災」は大型台風が毎週のように上陸し、新潟中越地震が発生した2004年ぶりの2度目なのだ。

Prime Minister Abe selected 「転」. By the way, my guess is 「平」. 参拝者は私も同じ考えだが、平成が終わることにちなんで「平」や「終」などを予想する人も多かったようだ。なお阿部首相は日露関係の大きな転機が訪れてきたことや6月に米朝首脳会談が実現したことから「転」を選んだ。
