は When it’s a particle, it’s pronounced “wa” Particle Party! は When it’s a particle, it’s pronounced “wa” It tells you what the topic is.

XはYです。 X is Y. わたしは 男の子です。 I am a boy. いぬは くろです。 The dog is black. せんせいのcomputerは Macです。 The teacher’s computer is a Mac.

Make sentences saying “x is y”, using the particle 『は』 えんぴつ おんなのこ とうきょう つくえ あか おおきい

『は』tells you what the topic is. It follows the topic in the sentence. うさぎは かなしいです。 The rabbit is sad. うさぎは いぬです。 The rabbit is a dog. うさぎは いぬが すきじゃないです。

いぬは　うさぎを　たべます。

Once the topic is established, it is often omitted. これは うさぎです。 This is a rabbit. かなしいです。 (the rabbit) is sad. うさぎはいぬです。 The rabbit is dog. いぬが すきじゃないです。(the rabbit) doesn’t like dogs. いぬは うさぎを たべます。 The dog eats rabbits.

ちょっとまって！ The last two sentences were: いぬが すきじゃないです。 いぬは うさぎを たべます。 What’s with 『が』？ うさぎは いぬが すきじゃないです。 うさぎis still the topic, but いぬis what rabbit doesn’t like.

の specifies the noun links nouns tells what belongs to what, whom, or where せんせいの　えんぴつ sensei’s pencil 日本の　たべもの　　food of Japan Starbucksのkoohii 　 coffee of/from Starbucks

なんですか？(what is it?) だれのですか？(whose is it?) Practice (flyswatter, identify AとBのあいだ

を It’s “wo”, but you don’t really hear the “w” It tells what the direct object of a verb is. Let’s go back to うさぎ.

いぬは　うさぎを　たべます。 The topic is いぬ. The verb is たべます/eats. What’s the direct object of eats? はい、pinpon! うさぎ
