2 Example of a self introduction はじめまして。ジョン・モリスともうし ます。 どうぞよろしくおねがいします。 I’m pleased to meet you. I’m John Morris.

3 The best way to begin is with はじめまして This literally means “Pleased to meet you” You then follow with your name.

4 Degrees of formality There are different ways of introducing yourself as we saw in the examples. Each way is correct, there are just different degrees of the formality used.

5 Once you’ve said your name this is where you decide on the level of formality you will use. ともうします Very formal; very polite といいます formal, polite です polite

6 Note: もうします and いいます both mean “call” or “say”. もうします is a humble verb, so using it shows respect for the person or people being addressed. ～といいます can be written in hiragana or kanji ～と言います

7 You may have heard of わたしのなまえは＿＿＿です。 This means, “my name is_____”. While this is understandable it tends to used by younger children.

8 どうぞよろしく is an expression you use when you meet someone for the first time. It means something like “please treat me as a friend”. どうぞよろしくおねがいします is a more formal way to say どうぞよろしく。

9 Let’s refresh our memories of particle “ は ” Sounds like わ Indicates the topic of the conversation Noun + は わたしは あんなです。 (I ’ m Anna)

10 Ａｄｄｉｎｇ ｙｏｕｒ ｇｒ ａｄｅ 小学校（しょうがっこう） primary school 中学校 （ちゅうがっこう） junior high school 高校（こうこう） senior high school ~ 年生 （～ねんせい） grade

11 高校 2 年生 year 11 （こうこうにねんせい） Use で to connect your year level with your age E.g. 高校２年生で１６才です。 （こうこうにねんせいでじゅうろくさ いです。）

13 Asking someone how old they are: いくつですか Formal Or 何 ( なん ) 才ですか Polite Or 何才（なの） For friends or peers

14 Writing numbers When you write across the page, use Arabic numbers. When you write down the page, you can use kanji or Arabic numbers.
