Secret Koala Culling Results in 700 Deaths
Nearly 700 koalas have been killed in what local media agencies are calling a "secret culling" conducted by Victoria state government employees in Australia. Officials are defending the decision, saying that the koalas were so overpopulated and starving that they were "falling out of the trees," but critics are saying that it should have never gotten to that point in the first place. Japan, Australia reach FTA(EPA) accord (日豪日豪経済連携協定大筋合意)
Australia, after the deal, becomes the first major farm exporter to conclude a free trade agreement with Japan, which is very cautious to open its agricultural market. Abbott announced the agreement at the outset of his summit with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who said the FTA deal bears " historic significance" for closer Japan-Australian relationships. Japan has decided to lower its tariffs on beef exported by Australia by up to half, while Australia has basically agreed to drop its 5-percent tariff on Japanese automobiles, according to Japan's Kyodo News. Trade between China and Australia has been rapidly increasing in recent years
In 2007, China overtook Japan to become Australia’s biggest trading partner (2007年末には中国が日本を追い越し、オーストラリア最大の貿易パートナーとなった。) In 2009, China surpassed Japan to become Australia‘s largest export market（＝ オーストラリアの最大輸出先）. However, Japan continues to be a major trading partner for Australia : Japan is the 2nd top destination for Australian goods and services exports and Australia’s 2nd largest two-way trading partner.

メルボルンを訪れた最初の日にフリンダーストリート駅の前で、ムスリム排斥運動する人々と警察がもみ合いになっているところを目撃しました。オーストラリ ア人の友達に話したところ、「多文化共生主義なんてのは掲げてるだけ、今は多文化のバブルがはじけた感じ」と言っていました。また、同じ日に訪れた移民博 物館では様々な場所からオーストラリアに来た人の歴史や、それを巡る騒動などの写真や道具が展示されていました。オーストラリア研究の授業で習った事件な ども多々あり、理解の助けとなりました。(Yoko Inagaki)
