2 この人(ひと)は、「おりひめ」です。This is Orihime, the Weaver Princess.
おりひめの仕事(しごと)は、はたを織(お)ることです。Orihime’s job is to work the loom.

3 この人(ひと)は、「ひこぼし」です。This is Hikoboshi, the cowherd.
ひこぼしの仕事(しごと)は、牛のせわをすることです。Hikoboshi’s job is to tend the cows.

4 おりひめは、ひこぼしがすきです。Orihime likes Hikoboshi.
ひこぼしも、おりひめがすきです。 Hikoboshi likes Orihime. おりひめとひこぼしは、結婚(けっこん)しました。Orihime and Hikoboshi got married.

5 おりひめとひこぼしは、毎日(まいにち)、遊(あそ)びます。The two of them play everyday
仕事(しごと)をしません。and do not work.

6 かみさまは、とてもおこりました。 The god got very angry.
「仕事(しごと)をしてください！」 ‘Do your work please!’ でも、二人(ふたり)は仕事(しごと)をしません。But the two of them do not work.

7 かみさまは、二人(ふたり)に言(い)いました。The god said to them,
「おりひめ、天(あま)の川(がわ)の西(にし)に行(い)ってください」‘Orihime, go to the east of the Milky Way. 「ひこぼし、天(あま)の川(がわ)の東(ひがし)に行(い)ってください」Hikoboshi, go to the west of the Milky Way.’ 「ひこぼし、さようなら」‘Hikoboshi farewell’ 「おりひめ、さようなら」‘Orihime farewell’  二人(ふたり)は、まじめに仕事(しごと)をするようになりました。The two of them returned to working hard.

8 かみさまはかわいそうだと思(おも)って、
The god felt sorry for them １年(ねん)に１回(かい)、７月(がつ)７日(なのか)だけ、おりひめとひこぼしが会(あ)ってもいいと言(い)いました。 and said that Orihime and Hikoboshi could meet up just once a year on the 7th of July.

9 雨が降(ふ)ったら天(あま)の川(がわ)の水があふれて、二人は会えません。
However, if it rains the Milky Way’s waters overflow and the two cannot meet. だから、私たちは７月７日がいい天気になって二人が会えるよう、たんざくをかざってお祈(いの)りするのです。 This is why we hang strips of paper wishing for good weather in order for the two to meet on the 7th of July.
