How to quote what someone says or said
says that Person は sentence in plain form ＋ と言っています
example: ジョンさんはきそくはふくざつだと言っています。 John says that the rules are complicated.
said that Personは sentence in the plain form + と言っていました Or 言いました
example: さちこさんはみんなおかしを食べていると言いました。 さちこさんはみんなおかしを食べていると言いました。 Sachiko said that everyone was (is) eating sweets.
take note: In direct speech, the speaker’s utterance is placed in quotation marks. The tense of 言う and what is quoted does not have to be the same tense.
よしこさんは「あしたもいっしょにえいがをみに行く？」と言いました。 Yoshiko said, “Shall we go to the movies together tomorrow as well?”
