The past of desu... To write Desu into past tense, follow the rules below: Past Positive: Change です into でした Example: これはにくでした。 “It was meat”. Past Negative Change じゃないです into… じゃなかったです＊ Example: にくじゃなかったです。 “It wasn’t meat.”
Guided Practice Write the following sentences into Japanese: 1. There was a coffee shop here. (koko) ここはきっさてんでした。 2. That was not a Japanese movie. あれは日本のえいがじゃなかったです。
IMPORTANT Remember that when using the negative form of です, to be more polite you could use… じゃありません Likewise, there is a more polite form of the past tense じゃなかったです. じゃありませんでした。
Grammar Point 4 – Past tense for verbs Past Positive: ～ます and ～います rules apply, but replace with ～ました or ～いました instead. EX. I ate sushi at the restaurant. レストランですしをたべました。 I listened to music at home. いえでおんがくをききました。 Past Negative ~replace ～ません with ～ませんでした. EX. I didn’t eat sushi at the restaurant. わたしはレストランですしをたべませ んでした。
