Grammar Point 2: Describing the locations of objects 第四課文法二 Grammar Point 2: Describing the locations of objects

Quick REVIEw We’ve learned that there are two verbs to use when describing that “…something exists.” Which word do you use for living things? Which word for non-living objects? There is a cat over there (far away) あそこにねこがいます。 The hotel is over there (far away) あそこにホテルがあります。

Where is the mcdonalds? When presented with the question: マクドナルドはどこですか。 Where is the McDonalds? You can easily answer with: マクドナルドは (ここ そこ あそこ)です。 *Note: Why did we not use が?

Describing locations with more detail This chapter, we will learn to describe things using a little bit more detail… In order to do so, we’ll need to use new vocabulary:

Word Meaning みぎ Migi Right ひだり Hidari Left まえ mae In front of うしろ ushiro Behind なか naka Middle/inside うえ ue Above/on top of した shita Below/under そば soba Near となり tonari Next to あいだ aida In between (A と B の)

How to use these words When using these words, we will be using the particle の. We know that の is often used for ownership of an item. It can also be used as the English word: “of” EX. せんせいのまえ。。。 In front OF Sensei…

USE THIS FRAME TO Make A Sentence                            {みぎ}                            {ひだり}                            {まえ}                            {うしろ} (Place/Thing) は (another place/thing) の {なか} です。                            {うえ}                            {した}                            {そば}                            {となり}

Guided Practice Write the following sentences into Japanese: 1. The bank is next to the library. ぎんこう は としょかん の となり です。 2. The umbrella is under the desk. かさ は つくえ の した です。

USING AIDA (In Between) If you want to say that something is in between two objects, there is a slight change to the format: Place/Thing は (1st Place/thing) と (2nd Place/thing) の あいだ です。 EX. レストランはデパートとびょういんのあいだです。 The restaurant is between the department store and hospital.

You can use “で” to further describe where something happens Ex. 私はマクドナルドのまえでメアリーさんをまちます。 I will wait for Mary in front of the McDonalds.

Write the following sentences into Japanese: 1. The hat is under the desk. ぼうしはつくえのしたです。 2. Rhea is next to Adanya. Rhea さん は Adanya さん の となりです。 3. The bus stop is in front of the super market. バスていはスーパーのまえです。 4. Josh is behind Lizet. Josh さん は Lizet さん のうしろです。 5. The cat is between the dog and the bread. ねこはいぬとパンのあいだです。
