The future tense 2150625 Takuya Mochizuki

Today’s Topics What is the future tense ? The meaning of “will” The meaning of “be going to do” The difference between “will” and “be going to do” Quiz Activity

1. What is the future tense ? The future tense is…… expressing an event . ( Oxford Dictionary of English 2nd Edition (2005) ) The future tense means . yet to happen past present future prediction

2. The meaning of “will” The meaning of “will” is… expressing a strong intention about the future. ( Oxford Dictionary of English 2nd Edition (2005) ) When you use “will, ” you believe that your prediction will be realized 100% in the future. However, this is just a prediction, so the basic meaning of “will” is 「今思いついて発言する。」in Japanese.

3. The meaning of “be going to do” “Be going to do” is a figure of speech to reveal that someone/something is moving toward an action/a condition. When you want to say that you are planning some events in the future, you can use “be going to do.” ⇒ 日本語訳:「~する予定です。」 And “be going to do” is used when there is sensory evidence for your prediction.

4. The difference between “will” and “be going to do” 単なる予測に過ぎないが、100%そうなると信じている。 e.g. I’ll come back in an hour.(1時間後に戻ります。) Be going to do「ある行為、状態に向かっている途中」 人・物の様子が観察できる。既に決まった予定を述べる。 e.g. ・He is going to fall down. (彼、倒れるよ。) ・I’m going to see a doctor this afternoon. (午後は病院に行くんだ。)

5. Quiz ~rules~ Make a group of 4 .(○ only boys or only girls ) Look at the screen and listen to the question. Every questions has two options, so you discuss which is more suitable with your group members in 30 seconds. After 30 seconds, one of the group members raises the card. If your answer is correct, you will get 1 point!

am going to lend will lend (Joe and Tom are going shopping.) Joe : Oh, No!!! I’ve left my wallet at home!!! Tom : Don’t worry. I ( ) you some money. Joe : Thanks!! 正解:will lend Joeが財布を家に置き忘れることはあらかじめ決まっ ていたことではなく、その時にTomが気を利かせて お金を貸した。 will lend am going to lend

(Lisa and Mary are walking outside. ) Lisa : Look at the sky (Lisa and Mary are walking outside.) Lisa : Look at the sky! It is covered with dark clouds! Mary : It ( ) soon. 正解:is going to rain 空の様子を見て、雨が降りそうな状況がわかっている ので、is going to rain が適切。 will rain is going to rain

(Keiko and Yuka are talking about plans for a weekend) Keiko : This week has three consecutive holidays. Any plans for this weekend? Yuka : I ( ) go to a Gero hot spring with my family. Keiko : Really!? That’s great!! 正解:am going to 「週末の予定は?」と聞かれて答える場合、予定は既 に決まっているのが普通なので、am going to が適当。 will am going to

What will you (are you going to) do in 2017 ? Activity What will you (are you going to) do in 2017 ?
